Breastfeeding is Good for Mothers
Breastfeeding can strengthen the bond between mother and baby. It helps a woman lose the weight she gained during pregnancy. It can also lower her risk of ovarian and breast cancer. Breast milk is less expensive than buying formula, and can save you money.
A Benefit of your Health Plan...
Breastfeeding is best for both mom and baby. Because of this, your Health Plan wants to help women breastfeed their infants for the first year of life. Pregnant women, or women with new babies, can meet with a special teacher who will help them with breastfeeding. They can learn about breastfeeding, and your Health Plan will pay for it.
Problems with Breastfeeding
Most mothers want to breastfeed, but problems can happen that stop them. Their baby may not latch on properly. Some women’s nipples might be inverted, or become very sore. Women who return to work may be away from their baby most of the day. These women can get help.
Overcoming Problems
Special teachers can help women overcome problems so they can breastfeed. These teachers are called “Certified Lactation Educators (CLEs)” or “Certified Lactation Consultants (CLCs). Your Health Plan will pay for up to one hour with a CLC or CLE! They will pay for more than one hour if the mom needs extra help.
