Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): What You Need to Know
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are infections that can be passed from one person to another through sexual contact. They used to be called STDs.
STIs are common, and many people do not have symptoms. Even without symptoms, STIs can still be passed to others and may cause health problems if not treated.
Some STIs are caused by bacteria and can be cured with treatment. Others are caused by viruses and can be treated to manage symptoms, but they do not go away completely.
How do STIs spread?
- Vaginal sex
- Oral sex
- Anal sex
- Genital-to-genital rubbing (“dry humping”)
- Hand-to-genital contact (like fingering or hand jobs)
- Having sex without a condom or barrier
- Having multiple sexual partners
- Sharing needles to inject drugs
Signs and symptoms
Many STIs have no symptoms at all. When symptoms do happen, they may include:
- Sores, bumps, or rashes on or around the genitals
- New or unusual discharge
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Itching, pain, or irritation
- Flu‑like symptoms (fever, fatigue, body aches)
Get tested to know for sure
- A urine sample
- A vaginal swab
- A small blood test, such as a finger prick
Ask your doctor or health care provider about STI testing. Getting tested helps protect your health and the health of your partner or partners.
